There are those, of course,ho ould adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But mostpeople ould be chastened by the certainty of impending death.

In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by somestroke of fortune, but almost alays his sense of values is changed. He beesmore appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. Ithas often been noted that those ho live, or have lived, in the shado of deathbring a mello seetness to everything they do.

Most of us, hoever, take life for granted. We kno that one day e mustdie, but usually e picture that day as far in the future. When e are inbuoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The daysstretch out in an endless vista. So e go about our petty tasks, hardly aare ofour listless attitude toard life.

The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our facultiesand senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize themanifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation applyto those ho have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those ho have neversuffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of theseblessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily,ithout concentration and ith little appreciation. It is the same old story ofnot being grateful for hat e have until e lose it, of not being conscious ofhealth until e are ill.

I have often thought it ould be a blessing if each human being erestricken blind and deaf for a fe days at some time during his early adult life.Darkness ould make him more appreciative of sight; silence ould teach him thejoys of sound.
