Charlie Chaplin, born on April 16th, 1889 in London, England, was the product of a family of entertainers. His father, though not a renowned name in the industry, excelled in his own right. His mother, Hannah, was also an entertainer, possessing an exceptional ability as a mimic with a sweet and charming voice. Although they were not affluent by any means, the music hall provided the Chaplins with a comfortable living.

Unfortunately, their happy life did not last long. Father's alcoholism slowly but surely destroyed his marriage. It finally ended in divorce, but Hannah was unyielding. Without her, Charlie Chaplin could have easily been just another child lost in the poverty of Victorian London. She not only managed to keep Charlie and his brother Sydney clean and well-dressed but also conjured up little treats for them. She would sit at home observing the passersby, guessing at their characters from their appearance and behavior, spinning tales to entertain Charlie and Sydney. Charlie absorbed her skills and used them throughout his life.

Charlie always believed, even in the worst of times, that he had something special locked inside him. He summoned his courage and went to see one of the theatrical agents. Despite having no experience, he was offered the role of Billy - the pageboy in a new production of "Sherlock Holmes". The play opened on July 27th, 1903 at the enormous "Pavilion Theatre". Charlie seemed to transform overnight. It was as if he had found what he was meant to do.

In 1908, Charlie fell in love. Hetty Kelly was only fifteen. But her parents quashed the romance before it really began. However, the memory of pretty Hetty stayed with Charlie throughout his life.

In 1910, when Karno set off on his yearly American tour, Charlie was one of the best pantomime artists ever seen there. They had reached Philadelphia when a telegram arrived offering him the chance to replace a star in the Keystone film company.

Cinema was born in the same year as Charlie, yet people still believed it to be a passing fad and could not replace live shows. He waited around for several weeks and used the time to observe and learn. He was determined to master this new medium which offered him the chance of money and success - and set him free from the unpredictable live audience.

Charlie's first film, released in February 1914, was called "Making a Living". Although it didn't satisfy Charlie, the public liked it. After that, he made ten more films and learned a lot. The public loved him, and distributors demanded more and more Chaplin films. In an incredibly short time, Charlie had become a very important man in motion pictures.

Born into an entertaining family in London on April 16th, 1889, Charlie Chaplin's early life was immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of music hall culture thanks to his parents' careers as entertainers. His father provided a solid foundation for his future endeavors despite not being a renowned figure in the industry. Hannah, his mother, possessed extraordinary talent as a mimic with a captivating voice that influenced her son's early development greatly. While they were not affluent by any means, their life in the music hall provided them with a comfortable existence.
